OU’s Spencer Rattler Named No. 1 Pick in 2022 Mock Draft

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler was mocked as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, according to a first-round mock draft by The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, released on Tuesday.
Now, sure, it’s a full year and plenty can happen between now and next April. And, in order for Rattler to occupy said No. 1 spot, he would have to leave college early. But, if the redshirt sophomore continues the legacy of Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts, leaving early would certainly be on the table.
Brugler, The Athletic’s main draft analyst, projected Rattler to go to the Houston Texans, who are dealing with a controversial situation with their current starter, Deshaun Watson. Per Brugler:
‘The future in Houston for Deshaun Watson is uncertain, which could put the Texans in the quarterback market next offseason, especially if they own the No. 1 pick. In his first season as a starter, Rattler made plenty of mistakes, but he got better as the campaign progressed. He should continue that development under head coach Lincoln Riley.’
Even with the slow start to his 2020 campaign, Rattler threw for 3,031 yards, 28 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He also rushed for six more touchdowns.
And, as for those seven interceptions, five game in a three-game stretch against Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas to three of the season’s first four games. Rattler threw two interceptions in his remaining seven games, which included a Big 12 Championship game win over Iowa State and a Cotton Bowl win over Florida.
Rattler was the only Big 12 player Brugler included in his first-round mock draft.
