HCS Roundtable: Big 12 Week 10 Locks of the Week

NCAA Football: Kansas at Oklahoma State

The Big 12 has been among the most unpredictable conferences in America this season, and that has really shown up on the boards in Vegas through seven weeks of football.

Coming into Week 10, underdogs in Big 12 play are 10-5 straight up, and just one team remains undefeated in conference play, as TCU sits atop the league at 8-0.

Despite this crazy season, the Heartland College Sports staff has weathered the weekly storm to stay ahead in its locks of the week. Through nine weeks, their combined record is 22-11-1, with Pete sitting at 7-2 on the year and Bryan just behind at 6-2-1. Let’s see if they can keep things going here in Week 10.

PETE MUNDO (RECORD: 7-2)

GAME: Baylor at Oklahoma (-3.5)

Oklahoma and Baylor are both riding two-game winning streaks, but who is actually the better team? Baylor’s line play on both sides of the ball has dramatically improved, and it is the Bears who are still in the Big 12 Championship hunt, while OU is essentially out of the picture. Also, Baylor gets to go up against Oklahoma’s last-place rushing defense (by a wide margin), which should provide opportunities for Baylor’s speed to be on full display this weekend in Norman. Meantime, Baylor’s rushing defense is the best in the Big 12. And if OU can’t run the ball and becomes to reliant on Dillon Gabriel, we’ve seen that not work out well for OU this season. Plus, is Norman going to be as intimidating as usual given OU’s struggles this season? We will see, but I think the wrong team is favored here. I’m taking the underdog.

LOCK: Baylor (+3.5)

BRYAN CLINTON (RECORD: 6-2-1)

GAME: No. 24 Texas (-3) vs No. 13 Kansas State

My eyes tell me one thing, and my gut tells me another on this football game. K-State is coming off its most impressive game under Chris Klieman and apparently sees a letdown in the Wildcats’ future. Meanwhile, Texas comes into this game off a bye week and just suffered its third loss of the season to the same Oklahoma State team that K-State dog walked last week. I know transitive property means nothing in college football, but that speaks volumes to me. Vegas sees Texas winning this game, and part of me wants to go that direction as well, but I’m going to go with the home team here to pick up its first win against Texas under Chris Klieman.

Related note: Texas is 1-8 ATS in their last nine trips and is just 3-7 all-time in Manhattan.

LOCK: Kansas State (+3)

DEREK DUKE (RECORD: 4-3)

GAME: No. 18 Oklahoma State at Kansas (-1)

I have no idea if Spencer Sanders is going to play but I am going to say that he will give it a go on Saturday. While this game may be in Stillwater, I trust the run game of Oklahoma State to do the heavy lifting here. Kansas has struggled against the run all season long and the Cowboys should be able to take advantage of that. It is also possible that Jalon Daniels could be playing Saturday for Kansas as well. This is a huge risk, but I am going to take a chance on Oklahoma State to cover this weekend. Plus, the Cowboys are in need of a big bounce-back game.

LOCK: Oklahoma State (+1)

MATTHEW POSTINS (RECORD: 4-5)

GAME: No. 18 Oklahoma State at Kansas (-1)

I don’t know why you want my advice. You can see my record. I know Kansas is coming off a bye week. But imagine just how ticked off the Cowboys are right now. The Cowboys win and cover.

LOCK: Oklahoma State (+1)
