Baylor Names Blake Shapen Starting QB Ahead of 2023 Season

The Baylor Bears have named their starting quarterback for the 2023 season as junior Blake Shapen has won the job. Head coach Dave Aranda announced on Tuesday morning that Shapen would be starting under center for the Bears when the season kicks off in the fall.
Shapen started at quarterback in all 13 games last season for Baylor, and despite going only 6-7 last season, Shapen was fairly productive finishing with 2790 passing yards, and a touchdown to interception ratio of 18-10.
Shapen beat out transfer QB Sawyer Robertson who joined the Bears following his decision to transfer from Mississippi State.
Head coach Dave Aranda was very vocal about Robertson’s impressive spring telling KCEN News‘ Kurtis Quillin, “Sawyer really progressed at the end of Spring. I have to imagine he will continue to improve and I told him, ‘You really impressed and we’re excited about your future here.’”
With a familiar face taking snaps in the 2023 season, Dave Aranda’s squad will have to make changes elsewhere in hopes of improving in Blake Shapen’s third year in Waco. Baylor entered the final two months of the season with a record of 5-3 last year before going 1-4 down the stretch to finish with an overall record of 6-7 and 4-5 in Big 12 play.
Baylor is hoping to bounce back with continued improvement from Shapen, and they open the season against Texas State on September 2nd and kick off Big 12 play on September 23rd against Texas.
