Willie Fritz Brings in Former Tulane DC Shiel Wood
Houston head coach Willie Fritz has been assembling his staff since being hired by the Cougars last month and has now decided on who will call plays for the offense and defense in the 2024 season.
Shiel Wood spent time with Coach Fritz at Tulane and will now head to H-Town to work with him once again as the defensive coordinator for the Cougars.
Wood served one season as Tulane’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Now, Wood enters his 15th coaching Division I football and his 11th on the defensive side of the ball.
According to a press release from Houston, in all four seasons as Defensive Coordinator or Co-Defensive Coordinator, Wood’s units have ranked inside the Top 25 nationally in rushing yards allowed – including tops in The American in 2023 and first in the Southern Conference in 2017 – and Top 35 for total defense – including second in The American in 2022 and 2023 as well as second in the Southern Conference in 2017.
The Cougars are assembling a fantastic staff under Coach Fritz and are looking to turn things around in a big way after going 4-8 in their first season in the Big 12.
