STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State faithful hadn’t had a field storming like that since the last Bedlam game in 2023.
The Cowboys, who were embarrassed by Tulsa last week, stunned the No. 6 Oregon Ducks, 39-31, in one of the biggest upsets of the first two weeks of the college football season.
The Cowboys clinched the game after the two-minute timeout after an Oregon fumble was recovered by the Cowboys defense. Three players later, quarterback Drew Mestemaker moved the chains on a keeper and Oklahoma State (1-1) ran out the clock on their first win of the season and their first victory over Oregon in three tries.
It was revenge for last year’s 69-3 loss in Eugene. Fans stormed the field after the game and tore down the goals posts on the north side of the field.
How Oklahoma State Beat Oregon
Mestemaker looked like a first-round pick on Saturday, as he started the game with a 75-yard keeper and finished the game with an impressive 109 yards rushing. Running back Caleb Hawkins had 110 yards rushing. Both had a touchdown, with Mestemaker’s gravity-defying 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter serving as the go-ahead score for the Cowboys.
Mestemaker also threw for 317 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both interceptions were on tipped passes at the line of scrimmage by the Oregon defensive line.
The Ducks (1-1) and the Cowboys were delayed 90 minutes by lightning in the area. Whether that had an impact on Oregon or not, the Ducks did not look like an improved team from last week. For most of the game the Cowboys defense bottled up Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, who threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns but only looked like a Heisman Trophy candidate on two drives.
Oklahoma State outgained Oregon, 554-281, and possessed the football for nearly 37 minutes, even though Cowboys head coach Eric Morris wants his players to play fast.
The game was Oregon’s first at Oklahoma State and it was OSU’s first Big Ten home opponent. The win also extended Oklahoma State’s national best 31-season streak of home opening victories. The game was delayed 90 minutes by lightning in the Stillwater area. The contest kicked off at approximately 12:30 p.m.
