The Iowa State Cyclones are set to close out the 2021 season taking on the Clemson Tigers in the Cheez-It Bowl, but they’ll be without one of their leaders.
Linebacker Mike Rose is set to miss the game due to injury, according to 247Sports Cyclone Alert reporter Nick Osen, who tweeted out the news on Wednesday morning.
The senior from Ohio has totaled 73 tackles on the season, which is the most on the team and 9th in the Big 12 Conference. He also finished the year with 12 tackles for loss, which is 8th in the conference, plus three sacks on the season.
Rose was a 2021 finalist for the Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top college football offensive or defensive lineman.
This is a blow for the Cyclones defense, as it’s expected to be a defensive slugfest between the Cyclones and Tigers in Orlando on Wednesday afternoon. It’s also the second major contributor, joining Breece Hall, who is set to miss this game for Iowa State.
The Cheez-It Bowl kicks off at 4:45 p.m. CST on Wednesday, December 29th, from Camping World Stadium on ESPN.
Update: 12/29 at 3:00 P.M. CST
An Iowa State spokesperson confirmed that Mike Rose made the decision to not play in the game.
