Kansas Lands Former Top 100 Prospect, LSU CB Damarius McGhee

NCAA Football: Texas at Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks just filled one of their biggest needs on the defensive side of the ball with the addition of former LSU cornerback, Damarius McGhee.

McGhee is a former four-star recruit and one of the top-100 recruits nationally in the 2021 class as per 247sports. McGhee was the eighth-ranked cornerback in the 2021 class and was the 90th-ranked overall player in the class.

McGhee’s grade coming out of high school was 0.9231, which would make him KU’s highest-rated commit ever if he had signed with KU following his senior year.

During his two seasons in Baton Rouge, the cornerback played in 13 games. He played in all 12 games as a freshman, playing 66 snaps on defense and 67 snaps on special teams. In 2022, he earned a redshirt and only played in one game before he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Dec. 6.

The Kansas Jayhawks had one of their best seasons in the last two decades of football finishing at 6-7, notching their most wins since the 2008 season under head coach Mark Mangino, when the Jayhawks finished 8-5. Kansas started off 5-0, stumbled down the stretch, but still reached a bowl game for their first time in 14 years. They ended up losing a thrilling Liberty Bowl to Arkansas.

The addition of Damarius McGhee adds some much needed help in Kansas’ secondary, where the Jayhawks need help. Despite the big improvement in 2022, KU ranked eight in the Big 12 in passing yards allowed per game. With the Jayhawks looking to take a big step forward in Lance Leipold’s third season in Lawrence, securing some veteran defenders is a must. Leipold did just that on Sunday with McGhee.
