After Beating Two Big 12 Teams, Key Player Announces He’s Done Playing For 2024 Season

NCAA Football: Mountain West Football Championship-Boise State at UNLV

After UNLV football started off 3-0, including wins over two Big 12 teams, quarterback Matthew Sluka announced late on Tuesday night that he’s going to use his redshirt in 2024 and will not be playing in any more games this season.

Sluka cited that he committed to UNLV based on “certain representations” that were made to him and says they were “not upheld”.

Sluka joined UNLV after four years at the FCS level with Holy Cross. He was near the top of their record books there, where he ranks first in career pass efficiency (147.4), second in career rushing yards (3,583), second in career rushing touchdowns (38), fifth in career passing yards (5,916) and fifth in career passing touchdowns (59).

UNLV beat Houston in their season opening 27-7 and then beat Kansas in Week 3 23-20 to get off to their 3-0 start. Sluka has been a big driver of the early-season success. He has has completed 21 of 48 passes for 318 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. He has also 39 rushes for 286 yards and a touchdown.

In the Kansas football game, it was Sluka who helped carry the Rebels to their big win with an 18-play, 75-yard drive that led to the team pulling ahead on a 4th-and-goal at the one yard line with under two minutes to play.

UNLV is set to play its first Mountain West Conference home game on Saturday against Fresno State, but it looks like it will be without their star quarterback.
