After four weeks, there are just 26 undefeated FBS teams left in the country, and perhaps the most surprising one is Provo’s beloved BYU Cougars.

After back-to-back road wins over SMU (18-15) and Wyoming (34-14), the Cougars set the world on notice when they demolished No. 13 Kansas State, 38-9, in front of a raucous home crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Heading into Week 5, the Cougars are ranked No. 22 in the country and on the road at Baylor (2-2) with a chance to start 5-0 for just the seventh time in program history, and the first time since 2020.

However, the Cougs find themselves as 3.5-point underdogs in Waco and there’s reason to believe that the Bears might be the team to come out on top this week despite what last month of football has shown us.

How could that be so? CFB Reddit user “Kruger-Dunning” has some shocking details that could provide the answer.

According to his research, BYU has been doomed to fail in day games in recent years. As ridiculous as that might sound, the numbers back up the claim.

Since 2019, BYU is an astounding 28-3 in true night games and just 9-14 in day games – that includes 10-straight losses to FBS opponents. When you take FCS opponents out of the equation, it’s even worse. BYU is just 5-14 in day games against FBS opponents in that span.

“Interestingly, I also crunched the numbers back to 2013,” Kruger Dunning wrote. “Prior to 2019, BYU was 17-17 in full night games and 28-16 in games with sunlight.

“So, something happened in 2019 that triggered the vampire transformation. I’m not sure about the cause, but flagging that BYU students visited Transylvania in 2019-2020 and published a story in the BYU magazine…”

So, does BYU have vampires playing on its football team? While it seems highly unlikely, how else could you explain such a stark difference in success between night and day games?

BYU’s Week 5 matchup with Baylor is set for an 11:00 a.m. CT kickoff, which means the Vampire Cougs will have to brave the elements of daytime to win this one.
