Another day, another transfer win for Deion Sanders and the Buffs. On Tuesday, former Tennessee defensive back John Slaughter announced his commitment to Colorado, giving the Buffs another experienced piece in the secondary.
Slaughter, who also visited Purdue, brings two years of eligibility to Boulder after spending the past two seasons with the Volunteers.
At Tennessee, Slaughter saw limited playing time but flashed when given the opportunity, finishing his sophomore year with six tackles and a pick.
And while his numbers won’t jump off the page, his frame, physicality, and SEC experience make him an intriguing addition to a Colorado defense that has to overhaul a secondary that just lost Travis Hunter and Shilo Sanders, among others.
Coming out of high school in the 2023 class, Slaughter was a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 54 safety nationally according to On3. He picked the Vols over offers from Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss.
From a Colorado perspective, this is the kind of portal pickup that may not make headlines nationally but could pay off in a big way down the line. With two years left to play, Slaughter offers a mix of upside and experience that fits well with the direction this defense is headed.
