Cody Campbell Shuts Down Joey McGuire Hot Seat Talk

Texas Tech mega-booster and Board of Regents chairman Cody Campbell made one thing clear Wednesday: Joey McGuire isn’t going anywhere.

In fact, Campbell says a contract extension and raise for the Texas Tech head coach may be more likely than a coaching change.

Campbell responded on X to a 247Sports article discussing potential Texas Tech coaching candidates if the Red Raiders eventually decided to move on from McGuire.

Campbell quickly put that speculation to rest.

“Absolutely nothing is going to change at the head coach position at Texas Tech,” Campbell wrote. “Joey McGuire is a perfect fit for our program, everybody, with an opinion that matters, loves him. He isn’t going anywhere.”

Campbell then took it a step further, saying Texas Tech is prepared to continue investing in McGuire and the football program.

“If anything, we are ready, willing, and able to double down on him and this program,” Campbell continued. “It’s more likely that he gets an extension and raise at the end of this year.”

Campbell even had some fun with the article, calling it a “ridiculous waste of time” before joking that if another one is written, the outlet should at least use a better picture of him.

The comments come just days after Campbell drew attention for his reaction to Texas Tech’s 37-24 loss at Cincinnati. Campbell wrote afterward that there was “no excuse or reason to lose a game like this” and that Texas Tech needed to be better.

That post helped fuel speculation about McGuire’s job security, but Campbell has now emphatically shut down any notion that Texas Tech is considering a change.

McGuire is 41-19 since taking over the Red Raiders in 2022 and led Texas Tech to a Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff appearance last season.

Texas Tech now turns its attention back to the field, where the Red Raiders host No. 22 Arizona on Saturday in a crucial Big 12 matchup.

And regardless of how the rest of the season plays out, Campbell’s message about McGuire couldn’t have been much clearer.
