Tom Herman Listed as Candidate for Tennessee Opening

NCAA Football: Texas Bowl-Texas vs Missouri

The Tennessee Volunteeers are on the hunt for a new head coach following the firing of Jeremy Pruitt. He was, at least in part, let go because of alleged activity that included handing McDonald’s bags of cash to recruits.

And now USA Today’s Vols Wire has put together a list of candidates, which includes former Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman. Herman was fired earlier this month by the Longhorns.

Herman has been a head coach for six seasons at Texas and Houston, compiling a 54-22 record. He was 4-0 in bowl games at Texas, ending his career with a dominant win over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl before being fired.

The rest of the list from USA Today includes Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, who of course has already been the Tennessee head coach at one point in his career, former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn, Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell, Buffalo head coach Lance Leipold, former Washington head coach Chris Peterson and more.

Oh, and they listed Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, but as we know, that just seems comical at this point.

There was a report several weeks ago that Tom Herman was pushing for the South Carolina job following the firing of Will Muschamp. But the job eventually went to Oklahoma assistant head coach Shane Beamer and Herman’s wife, Michelle, denied the rumor at the time.

It would seem that the best thing for Tom Herman would be to take some time off and reevaluate his options. He’s still young and can be a successful head coach somewhere, but recharging the batteries, especially when he ended up with several million dollars in a buyout, would be a smart play.
