Three Questions For Iowa State Heading Into Spring Football Practice
College basketball is heading down the home stretch, college baseball has started, but let’s not forget (I know many of you aren’t) that spring practice is already getting underway across the country. Last up are the Iowa State Cyclones who will started up spring practice this week. Here are my three questions for Iowa State heading into spring ball.
1. Brock Purdy
I am not saying Brock Purdy is a question necessarily as he finished the 2020 season strong, but he did have a shaky start to begin last season. Now going into his fourth season at Iowa State, will he have that magical year for the ages? The NFL will be looking at his every move this season and if he performs up to expectations, there is no doubt he will be a first round pick this time next year. From leadership to consistent play, this must be the year Brock Purdy takes Iowa State to the top.
2. The Wide Outs
Last season we knew the tight ends were going to be great and they were, but we had no clue who would emerge at receiver. It wound up being Xavier Hutchinson who by season’s end turned into one of the best receivers in the Big 12. While the tight end position still has plenty of talent, there is a question of who will be the second option at wide out behind Hutchinson? Could Tarique Milton be that guy? Or will it be players like Sean Shaw Jr. or Joe Scates? The Cyclones always seem to have one solid wide receiver but for the offense to hit that next level, some more guys need to step up.
3. Handling Expectations
Normally I only put position groups but think about it. This Iowa State team is a favorite to make it to the Big 12 title game again and will likely be a top ten team when the season begins. While Matt Campbell has been phenomenal in Ames, slow starts have been an issue over the last few seasons. If the Cyclones can erase those slow starts, then the sky is the limit for this team that returns so many veteran players. How will this team handle expectations when everyone is watching them? I want to see this team focused and ready to go when the pads come on and not be complacent.
