Mark Vital shared his new Kansas City Chiefs jersey via Twitter before the Chiefs took the field against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football.
Vital, who played guard for the Baylor Bears during their national championship basketball run last season, is pursuing a career in pro football as a tight end.
He signed a contract with the Chiefs earlier this month and is currently part of the team’s practice squad.
Therefore, Vital wasn’t in the lineup when the Chiefs fell to the Ravens in Baltimore, 36-35. But, Vital was happy to show off his jersey, which appears to be in his locker at the Chiefs’ practice facility.
Vital was not selected in the NBA Draft but did play in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. After it did not appear he would find a place in NBA training camp, Vital signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks and landed on their practice squad.
That deal did not last long, and Vital was cut by the Seahawks. But he landed a similar deal with the Chiefs.
That puts Vital in the position of learning from one of the game’s best tight ends in Travis Kelce, who scored a highlight-reel touchdown during Sunday’s game.
Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez played basketball at Cal and went on to become a starting tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons. However, unlike Vital, Gonzalez also played football at Cal.
Other NFL tight ends that played college basketball included former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates.
