Eli Drinkwitz Rips Kansas Over ‘Heroes and Villains’ Border War Hype Video

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz had plenty to say about Kansas after the Tigers picked up a 38-21 win over the Jayhawks on the road in the latest edition of the Border War.

And his message went well beyond what happened on the football field.

Following Missouri’s victory, Drinkwitz blasted Kansas over its “Heroes and Villains” hype video that was released ahead of the rivalry matchup, saying he didn’t appreciate the way the historic rivalry was framed leading into the game.

“I’m just glad that this whole right versus wrong bullcrap that was started just got settled on a football field, because it’s a football game,” Drinkwitz said. “It’s an American football game that people love to come watch and cheer for their teams. It’s not even deeper than that.”

Drinkwitz then took particular issue with invoking the history surrounding the rivalry, especially with the game being played around the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

“I get there’s a past to it, but why are we stirring that bullcrap up?” Drinkwitz continued. “It’s 9/11. This country needs unity now more than ever.”

But Drinkwitz wasn’t finished.

“I was embarrassed for them, to be honest,” he said, “and that’s why I tried to embarrass them at the end.”

With Mizzou up 31-21 with 3 minutes left in the game, following a KU turnover on downs, the Tigers tacked on another touchdown to make it 38-21, which turned out to be the final score.

Those comments should add even more fuel to a rivalry that hardly needed it.

Kansas and Missouri have one of the oldest and most bitter rivalries in college sports, and the return of the Border War to Lawrence had already generated plenty of attention throughout the week.

But after Kansas attempted to set the tone with its pregame hype video, Drinkwitz made sure Missouri got the final word.

And based on his postgame comments, it’s safe to say the Border War still has plenty of hate left in it. However, these two teams are not scheduled to play again until 2031 and 2032.
