Deion Sanders wasn’t happy with much of what he saw from Colorado during Saturday’s 41-7 loss to Northwestern. Apparently, that frustration continued after the Buffaloes left the field.
During his postgame press conference, Sanders revealed that he saw some Colorado players appearing to laugh and enjoy themselves following the blowout loss, something the Buffaloes head coach made clear he couldn’t understand.
“Now you did see a couple guys that I just go on because I don’t understand how you can have joy in a loss, especially when I’m upset,” Sanders said, according to DNVR Buffs. “And I’m walking right behind you. I don’t understand that. I can’t never understand that. Because I want to win every darn thing.”
Sanders continued, saying he couldn’t understand how players could find something to laugh about immediately following a loss like Saturday’s.
“I can’t understand how in the world you find joy, you can find a laughing matter when I’m right behind you walking in,” Sanders added. “I don’t understand it. And I addressed it.”
The frustration was understandable after a rough afternoon for Colorado.
The Buffaloes entered Saturday’s game 2-0 but were overwhelmed by Northwestern, falling behind 21-0 before finally getting on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Colorado committed three first-half turnovers, including two interceptions from quarterback Julian Lewis, as Northwestern turned the game into a rout.
Now Sanders and Colorado have to regroup quickly with Big 12 play approaching.
But judging by Sanders’ comments after Saturday’s loss, fixing what went wrong on the field might not be his only concern. The Buffaloes head coach also wants to make sure his players understand how they’re expected to respond when things go wrong.
Colorado will regroup before traveling to Baylor to take on the Bears next Saturday to open up Big 12 play.
