Brandon Walker, host of Brandon Walker’s College Football Show, is just about done with Texas Tech megadonor Cody Campbell.
Campbell, a major financier for Texas Tech, as well as the chairman of the school’s board of regents, is unmistakably noticeable on social media, particularly X, with his commentary around the world of Red Raider athletics. These days, it’d be tough to find a guy with more of a stake in Texas Tech’s success than Campbell, and he’s certainly passionate when it comes to the football team.

From the Brendan Sorsby saga to recent comments on active head football coach Joey McGuire, Campbell weighs in on just about everything when it comes to Texas Tech. This fact hasn’t evaded Walker – much on the contrary. Walker shared the following rant on Wednesday while discussing the optics of Campbell’s online personality and its effect on the school’s reputation.
Walker brings his take in the days leading up to Tech’s top-25 matchup with Arizona, with both Big 12 squads dealing with a smattering of questions in the latest injury report.
“When he goes on Twitter (now X), and when he talks in the press, and when he talks about teams and two teams, he is very unlikeable; he comes across as brash; he comes across as petulant; he comes across as whiny sometimes,” Walker said. “Texas Tech has one of the most likeable figureheads in the sport in Joey McGuire… I think Cody Campbell would be better served to let (McGuire) be the face of the operation.”
Campbell spends millions on Texas Tech and its athletic department. Isn’t he entitled to an X account where he can communicate publicly? Absolutely.
Walker’s suggesting Campbell is a damaging element at play with Texas Tech football, but one could just as easily argue Campbell – in his entire media messaging and X-posting habits – is simply part of the transaction when pouring millions into your football roster and adjacent athletics facilities. It’s part of the game, right? There was a time when universities didn’t account for this sort of thing, but if you’re going to take millions from an alumnus, you outta prepare to hear from that alumnus – a lot.
