Rondel Walker is a part of our Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s Top 25 returning players countdown as we get closer to the 2021-22 college basketball season opener.
No. 23: Rondel Walker, G, Oklahoma State
Where he left off: Walker put together a solid body of work in his first season in Stillwater. He averaged 7.8 points per game, scored in double figures 12 times and his scoring average was second among OSU’s guards. He quickly earned a reputation as one of the best defenders on the team and was in the Top 7 in Big 12 play in steals (1.5 per game). He shot 33 percent from the 3-point line, and that was second-best on the team. He also hit the ‘and-1’ layup to help OSU upset Kansas, a win that defined its season. He nearly had a double-double in that game, too.
Where he’s headed: He’s one of several Cowboys that benefited from the presence of Cade Cunningham last season. Walker probably won’t be the player that steps into his sizeable shoes. But Walker has plenty of areas to get better in, starting with his 3-point shooting (the Cowboys would love to see him closer to 40 percent). He’s liable to see his assists numbers go up (1.0 per game last year) and he should maintain his level of defensive ability from a year ago. Don’t be surprised if he gets All-Big 12 defensive talk by season’s end. Where he fits into the Cowboys’ hierarchy going into the season is up for debate. But he has the potential to be one of the team’s top three players by season’s end.
Top 25 criteria: ONLY players that played in the Big 12 last season were considered. Rankings are based on where players left off at the end of last season, as we are not able to make assumptions about the improvements players have made this offseason.
