The Biggest Question Facing Texas Tech This Week Isn’t the Opponent

As Texas Tech prepares for Week 4 vs. Sam Houston State, the status of a key offensive weapon remains up in the air.

According to reports, Red Raiders tight end Terrance Carter Jr. will be a game-time decision after recently returning from a foot injury. Carter made his season debut Friday against Houston after missing the start of the 2026 campaign, an encouraging development for a Texas Tech offense that has been searching for consistency through the first few weeks.

Carter has quietly developed into one of the more productive tight ends in college football over the last several seasons. After beginning his career at Louisiana, he earned First-Team All-Sun Belt honors in 2024 after hauling in 48 receptions for 689 yards and four touchdowns. He then transferred to Texas Tech and immediately became a key piece of the Red Raiders’ offense, earning Second-Team All-Big 12 recognition in 2025 after recording 55 catches for 624 yards and five touchdowns. Entering this season, Carter had totaled 130 career receptions for 1,596 yards and 12 touchdowns between his time at Louisiana and Texas Tech, establishing himself as one of the most experienced and reliable pass-catching tight ends in the country.

Even if Carter is available, his health will be worth monitoring closely. Foot injuries can be tricky, especially for skill players who rely on explosion and mobility. Texas Tech’s coaching staff will have to balance the immediate importance of getting Carter game reps with the long-term goal of having him fully healthy for a daunting stretch of the schedule.

That is especially true considering what’s looming on the horizon, with Big 12 play in full swing after this weekend’s match up vs. Sam Houston State, where the Red Raiders are more than a 30-point favorite. The Red Raiders travel to Colorado on October 3rd and then host Arizona State on October 10th. Having Carter at full strength for conference play could ultimately be more important than pushing him for an expanded workload this weekend.

When healthy, Carter brings versatility to the Texas Tech offense. His ability to create mismatches against linebackers and safeties gives the Red Raiders another reliable target in the passing game while also helping in the run game. Those are qualities Texas Tech could certainly use as it attempts to build momentum heading into the heart of its schedule.

For now, all eyes will be on pregame warmups and the injury report. Carter’s return against Houston was a positive first step, but whether he’s ready for a larger role against Sam Houston State remains one of the biggest storylines surrounding Texas Tech this week.
